In the 15th century there was a close connection between the sermons given by preachers and the pictures painted by artists. Preaching on the Annunciation spoke of the various states of mind with which the Virgin had received the angel's announcement. The fresco in Florence (1439-45) for the private meditation of a friar.
The Annunciation in San Marco, is located in a monk's cell. The Constitutions of the Dominican Order stipulated that cells could house images of Christ Crucified, the Madonna or the founder of the order, and the monastery of San Marco had Fra Angelico paint an incredible cycle of pictures in which each cell had its own fresco, suited to the role of its occupant.
